Rising Cyber Threats in 2025: India’s Response to Digital Warfare

In 2025, India faces a significant uptick in cyberattacks targeting banks, government portals, and infrastructure. The CERT-In (Indian Computer Emergency Response Team) has reported a 35% rise in ransomware and phishing attacks compared to last year.

Recent high-profile incidents include:

  • A ransomware attack on a private bank’s internal server

  • Data breach of a state-run health portal

  • AI-generated deepfake videos targeting political leaders

Cybersecurity experts say that hostile state actors, primarily from China, North Korea, and Russia, are using AI and quantum computing to breach digital defenses. India’s growing digital economy, reliance on cloud services, and political climate make it a prime target.

In response, the government has accelerated the rollout of the Digital India Cybersecurity Mission, launched the National Cyber Coordination Centre (NCCC) 2.0, and introduced laws on data protection and digital evidence.

Private companies, especially in fintech, are being encouraged to adopt zero-trust architecture, train employees in cyber hygiene, and work with ethical hackers. A new National Cyber Force has also been announced to counter digital warfare.

The battle for national security is no longer just on land or air — cyberspace is now the new frontier.
